Marin County Off The Beaten Track: San Anselmo
The vast majority of Marin County is comprised of protected open space and farmland — about 80% of the county — and that is the defining feature of the region, and reason our Marin Hotels guests plan a trip to the region.
A patchwork of national, state, and county parks combine to create a uniquely Marin abundance of natural assets easily accessible to the public. You can do no better than spending a day disconnecting from the hustle and plugging in to all that unspoiled nature.
Tucked into all of this nature are Marin’s 27 towns and villages. Some are famously charming (hello Sausalito and Tiburon). Others are known for their hippie ethos (shout out to Bolinas and Fairfax). Way out West you’ll find Point Reyes Station. And at least two are under-explored by visitors, one of them San Anselmo (stay tuned for the other!)
San Anselmo is located an easy 15 minutes from Acqua Hotel, and about 20-ish minutes from Mill Valley Inn and Waters Edge Hotel.
Things To Do in San Anselmo California
San Anselmo is laid back while also a little bit bustling, charming but not twee, and so inviting for a day of exploration.
The main streets — San Anselmo Avenue and Sir Francis Drake — are lined with shops selling all of the simple essentials: fresh-made bread, fancy olive oil, engaging art and objects, and one-of-a-kind fashion.
Narrowing this list down to our top 10 was a wee bit difficult! You will discover more — thrift shops, taquerias (hello Mi Pueblo!), bookstores, art galleries (The Image Flow!) and little spots to rest and people watch (the Coffee Roastery on the corner of San Anselmo Avenue and Tamalpais is a great place to watch the town go about its business). And wander around the side streets to to see the neighborhood of California cottages and bungalows, so charming!
MH Bread and Butter Cafe and Bakery does both things very well. Eat
your breakfast salad in the cafe and leave with some lemon bars and
focaccia to experience the best of both.
