Best Flat Hikes in Marin: Incredible Mt. Tam Views along the Corte Madera Creek!
We have a new flat walking trail in Marin to add to our Best Flat Hikes in Marin series, and she’s a beauty! It’s a section of the San Francisco Bay Trail along Corte Madera Creek leading out to the San Francisco Bay. We’re recommending a specific section of the path to our Marin Hotels guests because it immerses you in a uniquely Marin scene with awesome views of Mt. Tamalpais, waterside homes, an active rowing channel, abundant bird life, and a bougie outdoor shopping area.
The path is small section of the San Francisco Bay Trail, a network of more than 350 miles of trails that circle the bay. Their mission is to get all people outside to enjoy this region’s breathtaking and inspiring views. We love that! Learn more about the San Francisco Bay Trail.
This 3-ish mile walk is a hidden gem for visitors! It’s a local’s favorite, especially with people who live in the neighborhood. But if you’re visiting you need just a couple of pointers, we’re happy to help!
Corte Madera Creek on The San Francisco Bay Trail: Where to Park
Park at 100 Drakes Landing Road where you’ll find plenty of parking near the path. Park and head towards the water. You’ll likely see rowers entering the water here, this area is the spot in Marin for rowing.
Note for our hotel guests: it’s a short drive from any of our Marin Hotels (Mill Valley Inn, Waters Edge Hotel, Acqua Hotel).
Walking The San Francisco Bay Trail Along Corte Madera Creek
When you reach the path along the water, you can go left or right:
TO THE LEFT you’ll see a tangle of overpasses, under which is a path and boardwalk, leading to a pedestrian bridge. If you’re a movie buff, take note of the wooden trestle bridge famously featured in Dirty Harry.
You’ll see the signage to the Larkspur Ferry terminal, across from which is the lovely outdoor shopping area called Marin Country Mart. Stop in there and have a wander, coffee, or lunch.
Out and back to the Marin Country Mart is 1.5 miles.
TO THE RIGHT you’ll see Mt. Tamalpais. Head in that direction until the path ends at Eliso Drive for a 1.5-mile out and back walk. You’ll experience stunning views of Mt. Tam, lots of birdlife, and rowers sculling and sweeping their way along the water. There are many perfectly situated benches to enjoy the views and immerse in the scene.
Plan for a couple of hours to do it all, including an hour to linger at Marin Country Mart. We like to do that section first, with a leisurely stroll on the other part of the path after for a total 3-mile walk.
For a quicker walk, simply head right and do the 1.5-mile scenic route, and plan for 35-40 minutes.
We hope you enjoy this special, uniquely Marin walk!
