Meet Marin Locals: Luigi Petrone of Piazza D'Angelo in Mill Valley

Meet Marin Locals: Luigi Petrone of Piazza D'Angelo in Mill Valley

Our Marin Hotels blog is called Things To Do Marin so naturally it’s loaded with ideas and inspiration for creating your Marin County itinerary. One thing we think our blog is missing? Stories behind the restaurants, shops, artists, and all manner of businesses of Marin. As we delve into the stories of Marin's remarkable residents, it becomes clear that the individuals behind the county's beloved destinations are just as captivating as the stunning landscapes and attractions that surround them.

First up, let’s talk to the Luigi Petrone, owner of Piazza D’Angelo, a beloved local’s favorite Italian restaurant located on the bustling town square in downtown Mill Valley. Piazza D'Angelo is where the flavors of Italy meet the warmth of California hospitality all wrapped up in the family history that is the true soul of the story (In the photo above L-R: Paolo Petrone and Luigi Petrone).

Q & A With Luigi Petrone of Piazza D’Angelo

What’s the history of your family restaurant?
Our story began in 1981, when my dad and uncle arrived in Mill Valley by way of Queens, New York, after immigrating from Calabria in southern Italy. They quickly fell in love with Northern California and knew this was where they wanted to put down roots. Their dream was to bring the spirit of an Italian piazza to downtown Mill Valley—a warm, welcoming place where neighbors could gather, share a meal, and feel at home, just like in the small town they grew up in. Over the decades, the restaurant has grown and changed alongside the community, but its heart and purpose have always remained the same.

How has your family's heritage influenced the recipes and dishes served at your restaurant?
My family’s Calabrian heritage is at the core of everything we do. The food is rooted in classic regional cooking—simple preparations, quality ingredients, a respect for tradition, and a healthy dose of spice. We let the ingredients speak for themselves, the way my parents and grandparents taught us.

Can you tell us about any family recipes that have been passed down through generations?
Many of our sauces and pasta dishes are based on recipes passed down through generations. Our bolognese sauce, for example, comes straight from our grandma’s kitchen—slow-cooked, using a combination of beef and pork. Even when we refine or adapt a dish, the foundation always comes from those original recipes.

Can you describe the dining experience you aim to create for your guests?
We aim for warm, welcoming, and unpretentious meals. The restaurant is meant to feel like an extension of your own dining room—comfortable, lively, and familiar. Whether you’re here for a quick lunch or a special long dinner with friends, we want you to relax and enjoy yourself. Our menu remains an evolving celebration of Italy, including crafted southern Italian dishes, sometimes overlooked southern Italian wines, and Italian-inspired craft cocktails.

What is your idea of the perfect meal at Piazza D'Angelo?
Housemade focaccia for the table, a shared pizza (Pizza Salmone!) or appetizer (Burrata!), a good glass of wine, and good conversation. It’s not just about what’s on the plate—it’s about the people you’re sharing it with and enjoying the moment. (The best moments always end with tiramisu).

The Burrata!

How does your location in downtown Mill Valley influence your menu?
Being in downtown Mill Valley means serving a community that values fresh, seasonal food and a relaxed dining atmosphere. Our menu reflects that—Italian at its core, but mindful of local tastes and ingredients, and perfect for both locals and visitors exploring the area. Our location right on the plaza makes al fresco dining and people-watching a real treat.

What are your 3 favorite things to do in Marin?
I love biking on Marin’s winding roads, spending quality time with my daughters on the coast, and enjoying a hike on Mount Tamalpais. Marin has a way of slowing you down and reminding you what really matters.

What’s your favorite place to have coffee in Mill Valley?
I should say at our bar where the espresso is authentic (and also free), but I really enjoy stopping by Equator Coffees just down the street—great coffee and a real sense of community.

If you could describe Piazza D’Angelo in 3 words, what would they be and why?
Authentic, welcoming, timeless. Authentic because we stay true to our roots, welcoming because everyone is treated like family, and timeless because good food and genuine hospitality never go out of style. While the look of our restaurant has evolved over the years, it’s remained a familiar home away from home for so many Mill Valley residents.
