Travel Guide: Top 3 Waterfall Hikes in Marin County

A predictable cycle is in effect in Marin County: first the rain, then the waterfalls. We’ll take it! In this post we’ll have a look at our Top 3 Marin County Waterfalls. The first two are short drives (or a walk in one case!) from our three Marin Hotels, and are easily accessible trails frequented by locals. The third one has lots of WOW appeal, and the drive to the trailhead is loaded with classic Marin County beauty.

Dawn Falls in Larkspur

Dawn Falls is folded into Baltimore Canyon Preserve in neighborhood in Larkspur and is a hidden gem. Now you know! Combined with it’s beauty, the fact that it’s easy and quick drive from Mill Valley Inn, Waters Edge Hotel, and Acqua Hotel puts this waterfall hike at the top of our list.

Where is Dawn Falls Located?

Nestled in the heart of Marin County, California lies the beautiful Baltimore Canyon, a natural wonderland with hiking trails through a lush redwood forest. One of the most breathtaking sights in Baltimore Canyon is Dawn Falls, a picturesque waterfall that can be found along the Dawn Falls Trail. Official Dawn Falls site.

The Dawn Falls Trail is a 2.5-mile hike that winds through the lush forests of Baltimore Canyon and offers stunning views of the surrounding landscape. The trail is a moderate hike that is suitable for hikers of all skill levels, and it can be accessed from the town of Larkspur.

Best Time to Visit Dawn Falls

One of the best times to hike the Dawn Falls Trail is early in the morning when the forest comes alive with the sounds of birds chirping and the rush of water from the nearby creek. This time of year the air is crisp and cool, and the light is soft and golden, creating a magical atmosphere that is perfect for a peaceful hike.

Where to Park to Visit Dawn Falls

Parking at the trailhead is limited, do yourself a favor and don’t attempt it. There’s room for only 4 cars and it’s not easy to turn around. Find a spot in the neighborhood near the intersection of Magnolia and Madrone in the neighborhood and walk to the trailhead. Map here. Or park anywhere downtown and have lunch in town when you complete your hike.

If you park right at that intersection, this adds about a mile to the hike, most of it flat. Worth it! You will see homes of all types built around the Redwoods — literally.

Dawn Falls Trail Experience

As you make your way along the trail, you'll pass through forests of redwood trees, ferns, and the beginning of wildflowers. The sound of the rushing creek is never far away, and you'll be treated to the sights and sounds of the water as it cascades over rocks.

When you reach Dawn Falls, a stunning waterfall that drops over 30 feet and creates a misty veil of water that shimmers in the sunlight. The waterfall is surrounded by lush greenery and boulders, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere that is perfect for taking a moment to reflect and enjoy the beauty of nature. Cascade Falls in Mill Valley

Cascade Falls is located just a 25 minute walk from Mill Valley Inn. You can easily walk to the falls before breakfast and you’ll probably have the trail to yourself. Since you’re in Mill Valley, combine your waterfall walk with a stroll around downtown and enjoy lunch or dinner at our sister restaurant Piazza d’Angelo. (p.s. remember to show your room key to your server for a glass of complimentary prosecco with your meal.)

Where is Cascade Falls Located?

Cascade Falls is nestled within the serene landscapes of Mill Valley, tucked away between Old Mill Park, a residential neighborhood, and Old Mill Creek. To reach Cascade Falls, you will embark on a leisurely hike through the scenic trails of the preserve. Your starting point is Old Mill Park, along the way you’ll pass by homes, Redwoods, ferns, and more.

If you’re driving over from Waters Edge Hotel or Acqua Hotel, you’ll find street parking in the neighborhood around the area near Old Mill Park, where the trail to the falls starts.

As you make your way along the well-maintained trails, the anticipation builds as the sound of rushing water grows louder, leading to the grand reveal of the stunning Cascade Falls. Cataract Falls In Marin County

Cataract Falls is a popular destination for people from all over the Bay Area. It’s a short steep hike; your reward for the upward climb is cascading waterfalls along the length of the trail. This destination is a bit further drive from our three hotels (about 14 miles from Mill Valley Inn, 21 from Waters Edge Hotel, 18 from Acqua Hotel).

Where is Cataract Falls in Marin County

Tucked away in the Mount Tamalpais Watershed, located on Mt. Tam’s Northwestern flank. The Mount Tamalpais Watershed is comprised of 22,00 acres and is the water source for much of Marin. She’s a beauty with a thriving ecosystem and an awe-inspiring network of roughly 150 miles of trails.

Where to Park to Visit Cataract Falls in Marin County

When visiting Cataract Falls in Marin County, there are a few parking options to consider. Due to the popularity of the falls, parking in the area can be limited, especially on weekends and during peak seasons.
The primary parking area for Cataract Falls is at the Rock Spring Trailhead, located off Bolinas-Fairfax Road. This parking area can fill up quickly, so it's advisable to arrive early, especially if you plan to visit on a weekend or holiday.


Another option is to park at the Fairfax-Bolinas Road turnout and hike in from there. This can add an extra element of adventure to your trip, as the trail leading from this turnout offers beautiful scenery and a tranquil atmosphere.


It's important to note that parking along Bolinas-Fairfax Road is not permitted, and vehicles parked illegally risk being ticketed or towed.

The Journey to Cataract Falls in Marin County

The journey to Cataract Falls is an adventure in itself, as visitors embark on a scenic hike through a lush forest surrounded by towering redwood trees. The trail follows Cataract Creek, and as hikers make their way upstream, they are treated to the soothing sound of cascading water and the refreshing mist from the falls.
